VDL NedCar

Tenco has been preferred supplier of assembly tools for VDL Nedcar.

The tools provided different functionality, varying from simple position jigs to place logo’s to complex systems that enabled the assembly of the front of a case without the needs for adjustment afterwards.

Throughout the years, Tenco delivered over 200 tools for both the assembly of the BMW X1 and the Mini.

Example case

The assembly of a BMW X1 is performed backwards, starting from the backlights.

For optimal alignment of the front bumper with the bonnet, optimized placement of the bumper is crucial.

Before..

The existing tool that had been applied had several disadvantages:

  • With a weight of 5 kg’s, the tool was heavy to use
  • Because of its weight and since it was produced in aluminium, it had to be measured for deviations and calibrated when the tool had been dropped on the floor, which happened on daily base.
  • Screws and angular corners of the tool increased the risk of scratching the body work of the car.
  • Tools needed to be maintained, measured and calibrated on periodical base.

After

Tenco developed a the new tool, combining printed parts and cardon tubes which is applied in the engine compartment, engaging the upper edge of the bumper, which aligns it perfectly and allows it to be bolted in place immediately. This means that no rework was required on the position of the front bumper.

Benefits

  • Weight reduction from 5 to 1,2 kg, therefore less physicals stress for workers on the assembly line
  • The tool was lighter and structurally bonded and did not bend in case it had been dropped on the floor.
  • Less risk for scratches since the tool had round instead of angular corners and no screws were applied on surfaces.
  • No need for periodical maintenance, measurements of calibration.
